The return of 16 Power O

Here is one Bengals fan who would like to see the return of the Bengals signature running play in the Bob Bratkowski era of Bengals offense, 16 Power O.

The play consists of the left guard, the weak side of the ball, pulling while the center and the left tackle make seal blocks on their men to cut off back side pursuit. In the mean time the Strong side line the right tackle & right guard drive block their side of the line while the Tight End blocks the strong side line backer. In the mean time the full back leads the half back through the whole looking for the middle linebacker, and the guard roars around the end looking to kick out any trailing pursuit or the strong side safety. This run is very effective against the 3-4 defenses in our division because the line backers get lost "in the trash" and there is a definite size mismatch of offensive personnel versus defensive personnel.

This play worked best when the Bengals line consisted of Levi Jones (LT), Eric Steinbach (LG), Rich Braham (C), Bobbie Williams (RG), Willie Anderson (RT), Reggie Kelly (TE), Chad Johnson (SE) TJ Houshmandzadeh (FL), Jeremy Johnson (FB), Rudi Johnson (RB), and Carson Palmer (QB)

Play) Braham snapped the ball to Carson, Steinbach pulled, Braham and Levi Jones, made their seal blocks, Anderson and Williams drove their men, while Kelly kicked out the strong side linebacker. Jeremy Johnson lead Rudi Johnson after receiving the ball from Carson and by this time Steinbach made it around the end to lead the play.

Analysis: this play worked for many reasons in its heyday. Most importantly strongman Rich Braham successfully handled the opposing team’s nose guard. Jones sealed his man off (not too difficult). Steinbach had the athletic ability to move around the end quickly. Anderson and Williams were a great drive blocking tandem, and Reggie Kelly was an excellent blocking TE who often kicked the strong side linebacker completely out of the play. Jeremy Johnson was a pretty fast and explosive full back lead blocker who smacked the opposing teams middle linebacker out of the play.
When Steinbach came around end he was usually one on one with the safety leaving Rudi Johnson to run amuck. Chad Johnson and TJ Houshmandzadeh were an explosive receiving tandem who kept the opposing teams corner backs well occupied.

The fall of 16 Power O) why did this once great play suddenly become grossly ineffective? The reasons are many: Center strongman Rich Braham retired and was replaced by the puny Eric Ghaiciuc. Many times the pulling guard was taken out by Ghaiciuc landing in his lap when he tried to pull because the nose guard had pushed him all the way into the backfield! Left guard Steinbach left via free agency and the Bengals did not have an athletic guard to replace him, hence when the guard was not tripped by the center being pushed into the backfield, he was late do to his lack of foot speed. Fullback Jeremy Johnson succumbed to numerous late night Big Mac runs and ate himself out of the league. Age and injury seemed to catch up to about everyone else: Willie Anderson, Levi Jones (who requested a trade), Reggie Kelly, and Rudi Johnson. Only the threat of Carson Palmer and his receiving duo of Johnson and Houshmandzadeh seemed to put any fear into AFC north defenses. Then Palmer was injured followed by Houshmandzadeh and finally Johnson (who had asked for a trade) and the Bengals offense in total (not just the 16 power O play) was officially toothless.

The return of 16 Power O? So what now? The new Bengals line looks something like this: (LT) Andrew Whitworth, (LG) Anthony Collins, (C) Kyle Cook, (LG) Bobbie Williams, (RT) Andre Smith, (TE) Reggie Kelly (although I expect that Coffman may end up starting ahead of both Kelly and Utecht)(FB) Jeremy Johnson (a more svelte? or more likely Fui Vakapuna) Palmer, Coles Johnson and Cedric Benson toting the ball.

The most important questions for the return of 16 power O are: Can Collins move like Steinbach used to. Can Cook hold his block of the nose guard? Can Reggie Kelly continue to bean excellent blocker (or can Coffman or Utecht do better)? Will Jeremy Johnson return to form? If so, Benson looks a little like both Rudi and Corey Dillon, same smash your face as Rudi with Dillon's ability to take it to the house. If so the Bengals offense looks like a return to old glory days. Much depends on the return of 16 Power O.

And Now a Blue Print for our beloved Cincinnati Reds

Blue Print for the Reds

I think that the present Reds team has some serious deficiencies. If I were going to build a team, here is how I would do it.

An old baseball adage is your team must be strong up the middle in other words catcher, pitchers, short, second and centerfield. This is the basis of your team defense. It is also should be your speed basis on offense (except for the pitching and catching).

For my team I want a shortstop, second baseman, and centerfielder who can run and hit for average. The guys on the sides of the field first basemen, third basemen, left and right outfield must provide power offense. I start looking to put people into these slots from low A ball on up. In other words if you are not a power-hitting first base or left or right fielder, I am going to trade you for some one who is. No slow centerfielders, no power-hitting shortstops unless they have everything else (then it’s a very happy bonus).

Setting up your team in this way ensures you have team speed on offense and defense. Setting up the team in this way means that I would probably trade some popular players, but I am willing to do this to put the plan into action.

Right now the Reds are so very slow footed, so power laden, that they cannot even begin to play small ball.

Pitching: Ideally I want two power pitchers one from the left and one from the right for my one and two starter. I want the righty throwing fastballs and curves (not the freaking slider the Reds are in love with), and the lefty maybe a fastball and splitter. I want the third pitcher to have a sinking fastball as his main pitch (I want the ball on the ground). The fourth guy should be a guy whose best pitch is not his fastball ala Orlando Hernandez. The fifth guy I would want a knuckle-baller to eat up innings. I want the pitching rotation set up this way because in post-season play, the men in blue really tend to squeeze the strike zone. I think this is why Atlanta only won one world Championship. If you have to “pitch in a box” then at least you can get away with it for a while…

In the bullpen, I want a fire balling closer with a good slider (think Rob Dibble). A sinker balling set up man (Graves in his hay-day), a right-handed side-armer ala Scott Sullivan, a left-handed specialist with a good breaking ball (think Jesse Orasco), and one guy with a specialty pitch like Bruce Sutter or Tom Gordon. With this make up you are always coming at the competition with some thing different.

To fill out the roster I want a good utility player, a pinch hitter than can hit a homerun if I need one late, a back up catcher is a must, maybe another pitcher, and an outfielder with tremendous speed and glove.

This plan is very different from going out and getting “the best guys available.” I think that the Reds have done this for a very long time and it has not worked.

2006 Bengal Grades

Rating the Bengals by position group for 2006

It’s that time of year. The Bengals are sitting at home, and it is time to evaluate why.
Changes definitely have to be made. So let’s plunge in.

The Offensive Line-Grade A-

In my opinion still the best O-Line in Football.

Levi was out for a good deal of time. When he is in, he is maybe the best LT in football, can’t be speed rushed, can’t be bull rushed. Levi blocks very well on running downs, and maybe the smartest guy on the team. He totally shut down Dwight Freeny, Grade A

Eric Steinbach-will probably leave in free agency to play LT and gain his cash bonanza. I wish Eric well. Andrew Witworth will probably take over and will be an excellent addition to the team. Grade A

Center-Rich Braham a great old Bengal ended his career. I hope he stays around the team. Eric Ghiaciuc was his replacement for me he is weak at 300 lbs. and was dominated at times by nose guard or DT that line up on the nose. What ever this must stop! Ben Wilkerson also did a great job filling in. Grade C-

Bobbie Williams is a great power blocker who quietly but significantly improved his pass blocking this year. When he went out, the RG position was manned by the huge Stacey Andrews-who should be resigned-for the stellar job he did. Grade A+

Willie Anderson-the soul and conscience of the Bengals-going again to Honolulu-Grade A+

Tight End

Reggie Kelly is greatly wanted back by Carson Palmer. He is a great team mate! Unfortunately, Reggie is not what the Bengals need at tight end especially if they want to continue to run the no huddle. Eric Johnson of the 49’ers and Daniel Graham of the Patriots are out there. The Bengals must sign one of them considering the abysmal class of tight ends in this years draft, boy these guys suck! Tony Stewart normally blocks and plays special teams, He had a huge catch against Pittsburgh, but is truly the man with the hands of stone. He is a keeper as blocking TE. These guys played well, but there is not a lot of big play ability. With the Bengals wanting to do this no huddle, they can not afford a non descript Tight End. Yeah I know Gonzales is out there but there is no way Marvin will break the bank for him considering all the other holes he has to plug. Grade C+

Full Back

There can be only one-oops that highlander-The Bengals have only one. Jeremy is what he is. He is not going to make anyone forget Moose Johnston or Tom Rathman but he does well with what he has. He is a good lead blocker. Grade B

Running Back

Rudi seems to me to be slowing down, not that he was ever all that explosive. He can’t get around end, nor does he have shimmy shake in the open field. His hands are marginal which makes him a poor fit for the Bengal no huddle. He does excel at power running and has excellent ball security overall. Chris Perry, who has all the things that Rudi lacks, is proving to be very, very brittle. Next year must be his year or the Bengals must replace him (and Rudi too do to age). Kenny Watson turned out to be extremely valuable and played with heart. I hope he comes back. Grade B-

Wide Receivers

Chad is going to Honolulu again. He did tail off at the end and needs to keep his mental game high. T.J. Houshmandzadeh is a pass catching machine that is also going to Honolulu (hopefully). He is also a tremendous force in the locker room. If you want straight truth- no coach speak, no bullshit, ask T.J. He is my favorite Bengal. Yes he chucks his helmet, but I am really fucking tired of the Bengals giving a free pass to bad officiating. My only qualm is I am very afraid of the Helmet taking a bad bounce and winging a Zebra. If that happens, T.J. will be out a great number of games as Commissioner Roger Goddell is looking for a reason to really smash the Bengals bad behavior and this would be an excellent opening to do just that. Chris Henry, immense talent paired with itty bitty common sense. Good god could this guy please stay out of trouble. Who knows what will happen this off season? He could be in jail; he could be suspended for a good amount of time. Antonio Chapman was hurt all year; he should bring a new dimension both to the passing game and punt return next year. Good luck to Kelly Washington who played with class even though the dance was really bad. Tab Perry and Benny” the flash” Brazil will be back. Glen Holt might be a keeper as well. Reggie McNeal, don’t let the door hit your on the ass on your way out. Grade A-

Quarterback

Carson leads, he follows his coaches wishes, is a great team mate. He cooks, he cleans, he sings- badly. He threw for 4000 yards! He blew out his knee and returned in 8 months. Unless you have the man from Krypton, he is the man. Yes he did over throw guys, but consider the huge lack of snaps. He will be back next year. Grade A

Place Kicker

Plain and simple, Shane Graham can not miss big field goals and extra points, Draft a place kicker! Grade C-

Punter

Kyle Larson is an average punter in the NFL. He saved the Bengals a number of times with his fast hands on place kicks. We should draft a punter. Grade C+

Long Snapper

Brad St. Louis has been a credit to this team, but its time to go. Errant snaps can not happen in big games. Grade D-

Kick Returner

Tab Perry is very good. Chris Perry bless his heart gave his all for the team. Glen Holt seems like a very good addition as well. No game breakers but Bennie Brazil looms in the future. All of these guys have other roles on the team-a great bonus. Grade B

Kick Coverage

Kick coverage was excellent and we played some teams with very dangerous return men. Grade B

Punter Coverage

Punt coverage was excellent and we played some teams with very dangerous return men. Grade B

Punt Returner

Ratliff was abysmal. All and I do mean all he could do was catch the freaking ball. His decision making was very poor. Grade F

Defensive Line-Tackle

Sam Adams is still a positive force at defensive tackle although he seem to have lost a little. Domata Peko looks like a star in the making at the other tackle. John Thornton, is what he is, a penetration type DT. John did not have a very good year. Bryan Robinson can play DT as well. The DT’s were solid but unspectacular. There is not a difference maker unless it is Peko. In the NFL, they are a bunch of guys. The Bengals need an upgrade. Grade C+

Defensive Ends

Justin Smith will leave in free agency. He did not fulfill his promise of being selected fourth overall. He was an excellent team mate and was dedicated to his profession. Considering his numbers, he will be greatly missed and is a candidate for the Franchise Tag. Jumpy Junior, Robert Geathers is an excellent speed rusher. Bryan Robinson plays on run downs and then moves inside on passing downs. This has not seemed to work very well, but this may not be totally the lines fault. This team needs a difference maker at D-Line. Grade C-

Linebacker

There were times this season that not a single projected starting line backer from last years squad was on the field. Further, Odell Thurman and David Pollack have both probably played their last games in Stripes. One do to an awful injury (I was very thankful that David can still have a normal life-good luck and via con dios-I hope he stays around our town because he makes it better), and the other was a complete shit head. Regardless they are done! So too should be Brian Simmons. It is retirement time for this Bengal who has been a stand up guy. He was out a great deal of the time and constantly dinged up. Good luck Brian, but it is time to go. Landon Johnson and Caleb Miller are too small to play linebacker in the NFL both are weak side pass coverage linebackers but neither rivals Simmons when he was his best, in fact they are not close. Both are restricted free agents, I say let at least one or both go. Ahmad Brooks looks like he might be a player. He needs an off season to really learn the scheme. A.J. Nicholson might be a guy for the future we will see. Something must be done! Frankly, Adalius Thomas is out there; break the freaking bank to get him. Grade F

Safety

Madieu & Dexter played well, so did Kevin who maybe the best nickel guy in the league. I hope we can keep him as he is a valuable asset, and a good teammate. Frankly, I would not change a thing except to keep them on the field more. Grade B

Cornerbacks

These guys sucked! They sucked like a freaking shop-vac! To make matters worse James and O’Neal quit, they fucking quit on their teammates, their coaches, their ownership which paid them like fucking kings, and their fans. Keiwan Ratliff is a Corey Sawyer clone. He is too small, too slow. All of them should be shown the door before the damn Super Bowl is even played. Jonathan Joseph was the lone bright spot, and may be a star in the NFL in just a few years. A top shelf free agent CB would be a great boon to this team. Grade F

Coaching

Marvin had a disastrous year, but it was not of his own making. How could he have know that 2 guys that went to Honolulu in recent years were going to quit on him at corner? How could he have known that his two prized linebackers were going to be lost to his team, probably for good? I never really appreciated Marvin and his lack of shown emotion, but after watching Mora Jr. pout on the bench, head in his hands, I understand why a head coach can not afford that. When he gets down, the whole team deflates, defeat is inevitable. Marvin’s time management stinks! Marvin sometimes plays not to loose. Marvin is confrontational with his local press and they have nailed him to the cross. Frankly, Marvin needs to watch the Wayne Huisinga press conference over and over again until he gets it down. This is how you do it! Marvin has been very trusting; Marvin has been generous to his players. Marvin needs make some examples. He has ample opportunity to do this without hurting his starters or key role players. Some guys need to be put on the cross with rusty nails, I hope Marvin doe this, and soon. Grade C-

Offensive Coordinator

I am a Bob Bratkowki fan. His offense is balanced and exiting to watch. He was limited by personnel injuries this season. When he gets his tool belt back, and has a healthy Carson Palmer, the Bengals offense will again be feared. Grade A-

Defensive Coordinator

Much of what was said about Marvin goes for Chuck. Chuck could not have known all that was going to transpire. Chuck must also learn to mask his feelings, When Graham missed the field goal; He looked like a close relative had died, not acceptable. Still in all I would like to see him back, He brings great energy and drive. Grade B+

Ownership

The management did sign Sam Adams. I was leaping for joy. They have kept the team core together. Hopefully, Mike, Katie and the rest will continue to do what needs to be done. Grade B

Fans

Yep, we are civilized, no jerks here. We also have very little home field advantage too. Large hotels downtown offer these get away packages to out of town fans. Well that’s great for them and the hotels but lousy for the rest of Bengal fans. This is situation needs to be addressed by Marvin and the Brown family. So too, the Zebra’s are very comfortable at PBS, too comfortable. The Bengals get bad calls all the time and nothing from the fans. Maybe we need a little Cleveland here in Cincinnati!

Media Coverage

1530 the Sports Animal can not really go wrong with Brad & Lap. They are Cincinnati icons, however; the Sports Animal loves to brag about the 50,000 watts of power, too bad it is all beamed into KY. Frankly, what is the fucking Jones with KY and 1530? We in northern suburbs can barely get the station at times, same goes for people in Indiana or toward Columbus. Wildcat this- Louisville that-many of us do not give a RATS ASS about Kentucky or Louisville. We do care that we miss the pregame because we can’t pick it up, or there is interference from some bible thumping station from Dayton! Frankly if there was another sports talk station I would listen to it especially after they showed Pic and Waddell the door. So a split rating Brad & Lap A+, Angry Guys A, Breecher and all the old Bengals A, /1530 F

Why the Bengals No Huddle Bogs Down

Why the Bengals no huddle bogs down.

We have all seen it time & time again. The Bengals go into the no huddle and then go three and out. It is that Carson is being out schemed by the DC (defensive coordinator), probably at times. How many times have I screamed at the T.V. let Bob (Bratkowski) call the damn plays, way too many times lately.

I think, however, that is only part of the problem. Yes, Carson does get snookered every once in a while, but Carson will get better with time. He is a great student of the game. I have prodigious faith in Carson Palmer. I think the bigger problem is the personnel on the football field when we run the no huddle. Let’s review who this is:

QB) Carson Palmer
RB) Rudi Johnson
FB) Jeremy Johnson
WR) Chad Johnson
WR) T.J. Houshmandzadeh
TE) Reggie Kelly
LT) Levi Jones
LG) Eric Steinbach probably replaced by Andrew Witworth
C ) Eric Guicheck
RG) Bobbie Williams or Stacy Andrews
RT) Willie Anderson

First of all, when healthy there is no better O (offensive) line in existence at this time. None. What other line in the league can power block one play, pull a guard and sweep the next play, cut a counter after that, and then pass protect on a seven step drop? That’s right the Bengals; they are the platinum standard. So is there a problem in the line? They are supplemented by a fine blocking tight end and full back, however; this is exactly the problem. How so?

The premise of the no huddle is to keep the other team’s specialist players of the field along with having superior conditioning of your players. Are the Bengals in better condition? I wonder. The bigger problem is that the DC from the other team can scheme effectively because he knows what is likely to occur.

Firstly, Chad Johnson and T.J. Houshmandzadeh must be accounted for. That however is it. No one else is going to burn the defense for a long play. Frankly, Rudi, Jeremy, and Reggie do not have big play ability. Frankly, they are very pedestrian. Rudi runs inside well and that is about all. He is dependable and durable. He is not frightening. He has no speed, no shimmy, no shake, and mediocre hands. Rudi running a draw, or catching a screen pass is frankly painful to watch.
If Rudi is bad, then Jeremy is more so. No speed, no shimmy, shake, his hands may be a little better-just great. Reggie Kelly is much the same, although he can upon occasion sneak down the field; he is never ever going to make Bengals fans forget Bob Trumpy, Dan Ross, or Rodney Holman, nor is he a huge problem for the opponents DC.

The Bengals are quick to point out that they have Chris Perry and Chris Henry for that sort of play, but then you have substituted and scrapped the no huddle. When in the no huddle here is a list of plays that will not be effective:

Draw Play
Screen Pass
Sweep
Stretch Play
Counter
Deep Smash Route by the TE

The Draw play should be enormously effective in the no huddle, but it falls short because Rudi is just not nimble enough to get past the line.

The Screen Pass should also be there, but Rudi struggles to catch the ball. After (or if) he secures it. He is very pedestrian. Jeremy is even more so.

The Bengals running the sweep with Rudi are frankly an embarrassment. Rudi does not have the speed to get out side. The same can be said of the stretch play. Defenses can simply react to the play; there is no home run ability.

The counter play, again Rudi may get 10 to 20 yards while Tomlinson or Alexander would run for a touchdown.

Reggie Kelly is not a deep down the field tight end, so the defense does not have to plan for him. If the linebacker or safety carries out their assignment, he will be a non-factor.

For a moment wonder if the Bengals had a threat at tight end and a running back who could handle all the duties. Whose job just got easier, probably everyone’s.

With a decent pass catching running back in the game, Carson can now dump the ball off without it being a negative play. With a pass catching threat at tight end, Chad and T.J. are no longer double teamed. The offensive line now has something to put the defensive line back on their heels, the prospect of a successful draw play or screen. The outside running game makes a return to the realm of the possible, Bob Bratkowski’s job just got easier and he is not nearly so predictable- all with out substituting.

The reader might correctly state yeah, but we have who we have. True, but here are some ideas. The Bengals must acquire a bona-fide pass catching threat at tight end either through free agency or the draft. Eric Johnson of the 49’ers is out there I think the Bengals should make a tremendous run for him. The running back we all ready have. It is time that Chris Perry proves himself to be a big time professional running back. The time to pass the torch is this year, 2007. Rudi, never a burner, shows signs of slowing down. He can not run outside, he has improved his receiving but still can not make anything happen when he catches the ball. Chris Perry, however, is a threat to take it to the house on every play. He can also run the deep circle route or the sweep route, for Rudi not even a dream. This situation would open up the quick slants for Chad and T.J. and the tight end. The time is now.

If the Bengals can not make this situation happen, it is my feeling that the no-huddle should be totally and completely scrapped. The Bengals are better frankly with three wide outs in the game, or substituting like a regular NFL team would.

Why Don't They Blitz

Why don’t the Bengals Blitz More?

We get so very tired on watching our guys in stripes routinely get marched down the field by the other team’s offense. We long for a big play on defense, or at least a few good pressures. Why won’t Chuck and or Marvin blitz?

Rest assured that Marvin and Chuck do see what is going on, and I sincerely doubt if they are happy. Frankly, they are probably blatantly unhappy. So why not blitz? Well let’s examine the blitz for a moment.

Blitzing generally means that your corner backs are playing man to man with maybe the free safety in deep center field to prevent total disaster. Have you guys who are crying for more blitzes watched the Bengals corner play this year? Tory James was obviously collecting his last few NFL pay checks, and that is about all. Deltha O’Neal looks like he was wanting out as well. It has been long speculated that he is deep in Marvin’s dog house, probably never to return. Jonathon Joseph is a rookie who played very well this year. Like all rookies Jonathan will make rookie mistakes. He will bite on double moves, and get screened off on crossing routes, its part of the deal. Dues will be paid in the NFL.

So if we blitz, we are putting our faith in two guys who played like sissys all year and a talented but inexperienced rookie with Madieu over the top. This is a recipe for disaster.

The second point is that if you blitz it is paramount that you get to the quarterback. Consider at one point every starting linebacker was out due to injury or suspension. Consider that the guys that we drafted so highly a few years ago to be our line backing core for the next 5 to 7 years will probably never suit up in stripes again. Consider that Brian Simmons is in his last few years, and maybe has seen the best side of his career. Do you really have faith in Landon Johnson, Caleb Miller, Ahmed Brooks and the rest to get the job done? Frankly, when one considers the loss of Pollack and Thurman, the prospect of going to the 3-4 is laughable. Yes we can send Dexter upon occasion, but the safety blitz is a risky endeavor with corners this freaking bad. Frankly, the Bengals had better draft another corner number one, and then at least the secondary would be set for a while.

So why don’t’ they do something. Don’t they see it? Yeah, they do but when you have guy quit on you, you’re left with very little choice. Suffice it to say that O’Neal, James, and the under talented Corey Sawyer clone, Keiwan Ratliff, need to be given their walking papers as soon as possible. Kaesviharn has been a great Bengal, but he should probably be too expensive in free agency for the Bengals to keep. Thanks Kevin, we hope you do great, and get your big pay day.

Lastly, do you ever see the Bengals separate a guy from the ball by making a thunderous hit on defense? We have to be the softest hitting defense on the NFL. Who really bring the wood beside Dexter Jackson? Robert Geathers upon occasion can lay someone out, but it is not the norm. Is this an issue, I dare say it is. It could not be fixed in season. I am sure Marvin being a defensive hard nosed guy, was livid. He will adjust his team. He and Bresnahan could not have known that the starting corners were going to quit on them and that the starting linebackers would be out a good deal of the time.

There is a lot to fix, Marvin will fix it.

Welcome
